Wicker Park/Bucktown

Those who love Wicker Park-Bucktown will make the case that these twin villages are reminiscent of Paris at the turn of the last century. These once Polish and German neighborhoods are now a shopper's paradise during the day and a nightclub festival after dark. It is no wonder that the "Real World" reality television show chose this area for several of its experimental urban-living episodes.

At the six corner intersection of North, Damen and Milwaukee Avenues stands the triangular Flatiron Building, a neighborhood icon that marks the center of activity for the sister villages. Over forty diners and cafes line the streets within two blocks of the six corners. Interspersed along the same avenues are antique stores, art galleries, crafts shops, numerous music venues and a few furniture boutiques that appeal to artistic tastes. In all, there are 92 eclectic, edgy, avant-garde enterprises, each one of which goes unimitated anywhere else in the city.

A walk with your guide off the busy main thoroughfares will enable you to discover Victorian mansions and loft apartments that encourage alternative décor.

Do not expect anything mainstream in Wicker Park-Bucktown. In fact, if there is an area that is redefining Chicago's style, this is it. Qui, Qui…c'est la vie.
